BICYCLE SAFETY REVIEW
Equipment
 | bicycle in good mechanical condition with front, rear and side reflectors
|  | bicycle helmet
|  | water bottle and carry cage
|  | pump, patch kit or spare tube
|  | emergency tools (including tire levers for removing flat tire)
|  | first aid kit
|  | eye protection (glasses or sun glasses)
|  | headlight and taillight for night rides (flashlights can duct taped to bike)
|
Rules of the road
 | know basic hand signals for left turn, right turn, and stop
|  | ride on the right hand side of the road (with traffic flow)
|  | follow all vehicular traffic laws (lights, stop signs, one ways, etc.)
|  | no riding on sidewalks
|  | ride as a group
|  | lead riders set pace and stop at major intersections to regroup
|  | follow in single file
|  | leave 1-2 bicycle lengths between riders
|  | pass on a riders left
|  | announce road hazards to riders behind you
|  | no racing
|
Clothing
 | wear light colored clothing for night rides
|  | avoid overly loose or dangling clothing (can become caught in chain or wheels)
|  | avoid over dressing (bicycling is strenuous and generates body heat)
|  | have wind breaker jacket, gloves, hat you can wear under the helmet, and face/neck protection.
|  | after a ride change out of sweaty clothing
|
Miscellaneous
 | always wear your helmet when riding your bike
|  | never bike alone (use the buddy system)
|  | avoid biking in the woods during hunting season (minimally wear blaze orange clothing)
